Tootsie, Steel Magnolias, Death of a Salesman, and The Sound of Music

There are four great shows to open 2025 with the Manatee Players and we want you to be a part of it!

The first show of 2025 is the Tony Award-winning musical comedy Tootsie on our mainstage. Based on one of the funniest comedic films of all time, leading man, Michael Dorsey is a skilled actor with a talent for not keeping a job. Desperate and out of work, Michael makes a last-ditch effort to make his dreams come true…by disguising himself as actress Dorothy Michaels. This show is rated R for adult content and language.

Tootsie opens Thursday, January 16, 2025, and is scheduled for a two-week run. The show may be extended if there is a demand.

-Rehearsals are scheduled to begin the week of November 18, 2024. The exact start date will be determined after auditions are completed.

Later in January, the Manatee Players will produce the comedy-drama play Steel Magnolias, written by Robert Harling which was later made into the award-winning movie with Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, and Shirley MacLaine. This touching tale is about the bond among a group of Southern women in northwest Louisiana.

Steel Magnolias opens Thursday, January 23, 2025, and is scheduled for a two-week run. The show may be extended if there is a demand.

-Rehearsals are scheduled to begin the week of December 2, 2024. The exact start date will be determined after auditions are completed.

Following Steel Magnolias is the American stage classic, Death of a Salesman. Written by Arthur Miller, this tragedy opened in 1949 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play. It has been revived on Broadway five times (winning an additional three Tony Awards) and has been a staple on stages and in classrooms ever since with an estimated 11 million copies sold. The play deals with the themes of the American Dream, the anatomy of truth, and infidelity. A thrilling work of deep and revealing beauty that remains one of the most profound classic dramas of the American Theater.

Death of a Salesman opens Thursday, February 27, 2025, and is scheduled for a two-week run. The show may be extended if there is a demand.

-Rehearsals are scheduled to begin the week of January 6, 2025. The exact start date will be determined after auditions are completed.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music is one of the most beloved Broadway musicals of all time. Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. Many songs from the musical have become standards, including Do-Re-Mi, My Favorite Things, Edelweiss, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, and the title song The Sound of Music.

The Sound of Music opens Thursday, March 6, 2025, and is scheduled for a two-week run. The show may be extended if there is a demand.

-Rehearsals are scheduled to begin the week of January 6, 2025. The exact start date will be determined after auditions are completed.

The Sound of Music is open to children aged 6 and up. The child must turn 6 before January 6, 2025.
